INFO

This free .blend file will give you access to the ability to paint/scatter objects with limited knowledge of geometry nodes/Blender, etc. (Make sure you have node wrangler on.)

It's for anyone, regardless if they've used Blender before or not.

QUICK TUTORIAL

When you first open Blender, you're going to see a bunch of tabs at the top. Click on geometry nodes. Select the plane, using right or left click—whatever you picked, so that the geometry nodes actually come up.

Below, there is a node called “Collection Info.” There is a collection, which is called “small grass,” which you can see on the right, in the scene collections on the right.

You will need to connect the collection info to the Instance.

In other words, green noodle to the green noodle!

This will make the grass pop up! (It's a bug??? Don't ask me. I didn't decide this shingdig.)

You can then go back into the layout panel to check it out.

The modifier panel shows the options available for the geometry nodes. The viewport is for optimization, and the amount is for the render.

If you want to add any more settings than this, you'll need to do so on your own. (Or use my other materials when I make them available!)

To decide where you'd like to paint, you'll need to go to weight painting. (Object-->weight paint.) The brushes are pretty easy to use—it's just add, etc. They're pretty self explanatory.

Blue represents the negative, and red the positive. So, the more red, the more objects that you'll have. If you want more objects of a certain type, just duplicate more of them in the collection.

So just paint with a low opacity and you'll start generating some grass, keeping in mind that the viewport is not going to show as many that will be in the final render.

I have also marked everything as assets, so, if you know how to use the Asset Browser well, unlike me, congrats, you can copy this file and put it wherever you put your regular assets for that!

Before we go, if you want to change what's on the plane, just switch the name of the collection by dragging it over in the geometry nodes editor over to “small grass.” (Or you can click and type it in.)

Any further information/tutorials on these nodes will be put in other places! If you know, you know. I'm out!
